1 hr agoThe South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a serious alert, urging communities to prepare for potentially dangerous severe storms expected to affect several parts of the country. According to the latest weather outlook, unstable atmospheric conditions are developing, creating a high likelihood of intense thunderstorms, heavy downpours, strong winds, lightning, and possible hail in vulnerable regions.
Authorities warn that these weather systems could lead to sudden flooding in low-lying areas, disruption of transport routes, and damage to infrastructure, homes, and agricultural activities. Areas with poor drainage systems are especially at risk, as rapid rainfall may overwhelm rivers and stormwater channels, increasing the chance of flash floods.
SAWS has also emphasized that severe thunderstorms can develop quickly, meaning conditions may worsen with little warning. Residents are strongly advised to monitor weather updates closely, avoid crossing flooded roads, and secure loose outdoor objects that could be blown away by strong winds.
Emergency services remain on high alert as the weather system moves across affected provinces. Communities are encouraged to prioritize safety, stay indoors during storms, and assist vulnerable individuals such as the elderly and children.
With unpredictable weather patterns becoming more frequent, SAWS continues to stress preparedness and awareness as key tools in reducing risk and saving lives.
