1 hr agoKwaZulu-Natal’s transport authorities are intensifying efforts to dismantle corruption in the issuing of driver’s licences, targeting bribery networks that have long undermined road safety and public trust. The provincial Department of Transport says it is moving beyond investigations and into decisive action, with special units now actively tracing syndicates operating inside licensing testing centres.
At the heart of the crackdown is a growing concern that fraudulent licences are contributing to unsafe roads. Officials have revealed that some applicants have been paying bribes to bypass proper testing, often with the involvement of driving school instructors or corrupt insiders. In response, the department has strengthened enforcement teams, conducted arrests, and launched audits aimed at cleaning up the system.
Authorities are also considering bold new measures, including an amnesty-style disclosure programme that would encourage motorists with illegally obtained licences to come forward and expose those behind the schemes. The goal is to break the chain of corruption from both sides—supply and demand.
Officials insist that honest examiners and staff will be protected, while those implicated face dismissal, prosecution, and public exposure. The crackdown signals a wider push to restore integrity, improve road safety, and ensure that every driver on KwaZulu-Natal roads is properly qualified and tested.
