1 hr agoThe Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic), together with the Gauteng Provincial Government and local municipalities, has intensified public participation engagements on the proposed Vaal Special Economic Zone (SEZ), marking a crucial step toward inclusive industrial development in the Sedibeng District. The consultations are designed to ensure that communities, businesses, and stakeholders actively contribute ideas that will shape the final structure and impact of the SEZ.
The Vaal SEZ is envisioned as a transformative economic hub spanning multiple land parcels across Heidelberg, Rietspruit, Langlaagte, Zwartkopjies, and Kookfontein. It is strategically positioned to unlock investment opportunities in green industrialisation, agro-processing, logistics, tourism, and smart city development, while also strengthening linkages between township economies and larger value chains.
Government officials have emphasized that the project is not only about attracting investment but also about ensuring long-term job creation, skills development, and sustainable economic inclusion. The consultations allow residents to voice concerns, share insights, and influence decisions before final designation.
As South Africa continues its drive toward reindustrialisation, the Vaal SEZ represents a bold attempt to turn policy into tangible development. Its success will depend on genuine collaboration between government, investors, and communities working toward a shared vision of economic transformation.
