2 hrs agoSouth Africa’s clean energy transition just gained serious momentum. Renewable energy developer Mulilo has unveiled a massive investment—nearly R13–R15 billion—targeting large-scale solar projects and battery storage systems in the Northern Cape. This move is more than just infrastructure; it’s a strategic response to the country’s ongoing energy crisis and a push toward a more resilient, sustainable grid.
At the heart of the project are multiple solar photovoltaic plants paired with advanced battery energy storage systems (BESS). Together, they are expected to deliver over 700 megawatts of power, helping stabilize electricity supply and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
But the impact goes beyond electricity. These projects are positioned to unlock economic opportunities in rural areas—creating jobs, supporting local businesses, and improving infrastructure. Experts highlight that renewable investments like this don’t just generate power; they fuel inclusive growth and long-term development.
Mulilo’s commitment also signals growing private-sector confidence in South Africa’s energy future. With a development pipeline exceeding 30 gigawatts and ambitions to roll out 1GW annually, the company is clearly betting big on a green economy.
In a country battling load shedding and rising energy demand, this investment could mark a turning point—where clean energy doesn’t just support the grid, but transforms the economy.
