Cape Town is preparing to revive a powerful piece of its sporting history as Vygieskraal Stadium moves closer to restoring its long-lost cycling track. Once a vibrant hub for track cycling, the stadium has sat without this feature for decades, leaving a gap in the city’s grassroots sporting landscape. Now, under the City of Cape Town’s draft 2026/27 budget, plans are in motion to bring it back to life with a major investment of around R20 million dedicated to reinstating the track.

The project is more than just infrastructure—it represents a renewed commitment to community sport, youth development, and accessible cycling in a city where the sport has often struggled for dedicated facilities. Vygieskraal, historically known for nurturing local athletes, could once again become a breeding ground for future champions.

Cycling advocates see the move as part of a broader resurgence in South African track cycling, especially as interest grows in reviving old venues and improving urban sports spaces. The return of a velodrome-style experience also connects modern athletes with Cape Town’s rich cycling heritage, which dates back to earlier stadiums that once hosted competitive racing.

If completed, the project could transform the stadium into a lively sporting landmark again—bringing speed, energy, and community pride back onto the track where it once thrived.
