A recent warning from South Africa’s Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment highlights a dangerous and growing misconception: some people are applying transformer oil to their skin in the belief that it can treat illnesses like arthritis. Authorities are stressing that this practice is extremely harmful and should stop immediately.

Transformer oil is not designed for human use. It is an industrial fluid used to cool and insulate electrical transformers. The real danger comes from toxic chemicals it may contain, especially Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs). These are persistent pollutants linked to cancer, hormone disruption, immune system damage, and neurological disorders. Even small or repeated exposure can pose serious long-term health risks.

Despite PCB bans in many countries, older equipment can still contain contaminated oil, making its misuse even more dangerous. Health officials also warn that the belief in its “healing power” is a myth with no scientific basis.

This issue is not just about misinformation—it reflects how quickly harmful practices can spread in communities when education is lacking. Authorities are urging the public and local officials to never distribute or use transformer oil for personal treatment under any circumstances.

In short: what powers electricity is not meant to heal the body—it can seriously harm it instead.
