2 hrs agoThe latest milestone in the Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP) Phase II highlights more than infrastructure—it reflects a powerful story of cooperation between South Africa and Lesotho. A key feature, the Senqu Bridge, is now nearing completion as part of a broader effort to transform water security and connectivity across the region.
Spanning the dramatic Senqu River valley in Lesotho’s mountainous terrain, the bridge is an engineering feat designed to maintain vital road links that would otherwise be submerged once the Polihali Reservoir is fully operational. It ensures uninterrupted access for communities in Mokhotlong while supporting long-term economic activity and regional integration.
The LHWP Phase II itself is one of Africa’s most ambitious binational infrastructure programmes, designed to transfer water from Lesotho’s highlands to South Africa’s economic heartland while also boosting hydropower capacity within Lesotho. Once complete, it will significantly increase water delivery to South Africa’s Integrated Vaal River System, strengthening water security for millions.
According to recent updates, major works across Phase II are advancing steadily, with the Senqu Bridge already reaching near-completion and expected to become fully operational soon.
Beyond its technical scale, the project symbolizes shared development—linking communities, economies, and futures. It stands as a reminder that large-scale infrastructure, when built collaboratively, can reshape not just landscapes but regional prosperity itself.
