2 hrs agoKwaZulu-Natal is taking a decisive step toward fixing one of its most frustrating justice system failures — forensic backlogs. A newly launched forensic laboratory is expected to dramatically speed up investigations and restore confidence in law enforcement.
For years, the province has struggled with an overwhelming backlog of over 27,000 forensic exhibits waiting to be analysed. These delays have meant that victims and families often wait endlessly for closure, while some criminal cases stall or collapse entirely.
The new facility changes that narrative. By bringing specialised units like biology, chemistry, and document analysis under one roof, the lab is designed to improve efficiency, accuracy, and turnaround time.
This centralisation also eliminates the need to send evidence to other provinces, a process that previously slowed down justice significantly.
Beyond speed, the lab represents a shift toward a more modern and secure justice system. Older facilities faced issues like flooding, poor infrastructure, and compromised evidence — challenges the new lab aims to eliminate.
However, success will depend on proper staffing and equipment, as officials acknowledge more resources are still needed.
Ultimately, this lab is more than just a building — it’s a symbol of progress. If fully supported, it could turn forensic science into a powerful tool for faster justice and safer communities.
