1 hr agoCape Town is stepping up its fight against speeding with the rollout of smart speed signs designed to change driver behaviour in real time. Instead of simply punishing motorists after an offence, these digital signs take a more proactive approach: they display a vehicle’s current speed instantly, making drivers immediately aware of how fast they are travelling and whether they are exceeding the limit.
The idea is simple but powerful. By turning speed into visible feedback, drivers are “nudged” to slow down before danger or enforcement kicks in. Studies from the city’s pilot zones show impressive results, with speed violations dropping by as much as two-thirds after installation. This shows that many drivers don’t intentionally speed dangerously—they often just need a timely reminder.
Officials say the technology is part of a broader strategy to improve road safety and reduce accidents caused by reckless driving. The signs also collect data, helping authorities identify high-risk roads that may need stronger interventions like enforcement cameras or redesigns.
As Cape Town continues expanding the system across more routes, the big question is whether behavioural tech like this could become a global standard for safer roads. One thing is clear: smarter roads may help create smarter drivers.
