According to Rand Water, many municipalities are struggling not only with deteriorating infrastructure but also with a lack of qualified professionals to maintain and operate these systems effectively. From process controllers to maintenance teams, the absence of competent personnel is directly contributing to water shortages, contamination, and unreliable supply in several regions.
But here’s the deeper issue: even when talent exists, resources often don’t. Experts emphasize that skills alone aren’t enough—municipalities must also invest in proper tools, funding, and systems to support these professionals.
This situation reflects a broader lesson for developing nations. Infrastructure problems are rarely just technical—they’re institutional. Without strong governance, investment in human capital, and accountability, even the best-designed systems will fail.
Ultimately, fixing the water crisis isn’t just about repairing pipes—it’s about rebuilding capacity. Until municipalities prioritize both skilled staffing and adequate resources, water insecurity will remain a persistent challenge rather than a solvable problem.
