2 days agoThe closure of Ekapa Minerals in Kimberley has left more than a thousand workers facing a harsh and uncertain reality. Following a devastating mud rush incident that trapped miners underground, operations at the mine came to a sudden halt, eventually leading to liquidation. For many employees, this was not just the loss of a job—it was the collapse of their only source of income and stability.
Workers say they were caught off guard, with little to no warning about the shutdown. Now, they struggle to pay rent, feed their families, and meet daily needs. Some have expressed frustration over unpaid salaries, saying they feel abandoned during one of the most difficult times of their lives. Despite their anger, many remain restrained, knowing that ongoing rescue and recovery efforts for their trapped colleagues must not be disrupted.
The situation has drawn attention from labor unions, which are considering legal action to secure compensation and justice for the affected workers. At the same time, government officials and stakeholders are under pressure to respond to what has been described as both an economic and humanitarian crisis.
Amid the uncertainty, a sense of resilience persists. Even as livelihoods crumble, hope remains that support, accountability, and new opportunities will eventually emerge from the tragedy.
