The African Transformation Movement (ATM) has strongly condemned the move, labeling it a troubling step backward given Meyer’s roots in the apartheid-era government. According to the party, this appointment signals a willingness to compromise the country’s liberation legacy for diplomatic convenience.
ATM leader Vuyo Zungula argues that elevating a former apartheid minister to such a strategic role undermines the values many South Africans fought to achieve. He links the decision to broader geopolitical pressures, especially strained relations with a United States administration accused of spreading misinformation about South Africa.
Yet, not all perspectives are critical. Some political voices see Meyer as a seasoned negotiator capable of repairing fragile US–South Africa relations and unlocking economic opportunities. With thousands of South Africans employed by American firms, the stakes are undeniably high.
Ultimately, Meyer’s appointment reflects a difficult balancing act between historical accountability and pragmatic diplomacy. Whether this decision proves visionary or misguided will depend on how effectively he navigates both international tensions and domestic expectations.
