2 days agoA major new retail development is set to reshape shopping in northern KwaZulu-Natal as the upcoming Prince Buthelezi Mall nears completion in Empangeni. The 37,000m² centre represents one of the most significant commercial investments in the region and is scheduled to open in April 2026, marking a new phase of modern, convenience-driven retail in one of South Africa’s fastest-developing corridors .
The project is being developed by the Moolman Group in partnership with Twin City and Melta Capital, all well-known players in South Africa’s property landscape. Construction has been underway for over a year, with thousands of workers employed during the building phase and further job creation expected once retailers begin trading. The mall is designed to house around 90 stores, including supermarkets, fashion retailers, restaurants, and speciality outlets, many of which will be firsts for the local area .
Beyond retail, the development is also being positioned as a regional lifestyle hub. Plans include landscaped public spaces, modern seating areas, entertainment zones, and family-friendly facilities that aim to transform it into more than just a shopping destination. Free Wi-Fi, improved accessibility, and significant infrastructure upgrades around the site are also part of the broader vision.
As Empangeni continues to grow alongside nearby Richards Bay, the mall is expected to become a key economic anchor, attracting both shoppers and investment while reinforcing the town’s role as an emerging commercial centre in KwaZulu-Natal.
In essence, this is not just a mall—it is a signal of how South African secondary cities are rapidly evolving into powerful retail and lifestyle hubs.
