At the 2026 BRICS Youth Innovation Summit, a powerful message emerged: the future of artificial intelligence must not be dictated by a few global powers, but shaped collectively—especially by young people from the Global South. South Africa’s Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga challenged BRICS youth to step beyond passive participation and actively design the frameworks that will govern AI worldwide.

She emphasized that AI is not neutral—it reflects the values and priorities of those who build and control it. Without inclusive governance, it risks deepening existing inequalities and reinforcing digital exclusion. This raises urgent questions: Who owns the data? Who profits from innovation? And who bears the consequences when systems fail?

With BRICS nations representing a significant share of the world’s population and youth, the bloc has both the responsibility and opportunity to influence a fairer digital order. Young innovators are uniquely positioned to challenge outdated systems and push for accountability, transparency, and equity in AI development.

Ultimately, the call is clear—AI must serve humanity, not dominate it. And the youth, armed with creativity and urgency, may be the strongest force capable of ensuring that technology becomes a tool for shared progress rather than division.
