Where Food Costs Bite the Hardest in

As of March 2026, Springbok in the Northern Cape has claimed the unenviable title of South Africa’s most expensive place to buy groceries among major towns and cities — even outpacing big metros like Johannesburg and Durban.

Data compiled by the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity (PMBEJD) group shows that a typical household food basket — made up of 44 essential items — cost significantly more in Springbok than anywhere else in the country. What makes this striking is that rural or smaller urban centres aren’t usually the first places people associate with high food prices, yet here Springbok’s basket price surpassed the national average by a sizeable margin.

Following Springbok, the cities of Johannesburg, Mtubatuba and Durban emerged as some of the more costly locations for grocery shopping, overtaking places like Cape Town in the price rankings.

Despite a slight general decline in overall inflation — driven by lower costs in housing and utilities — food inflation remains stubbornly high, particularly in meat products such as beef, which have seen double‑digit price hikes in recent months.

This trend highlights how food costs, even when broader inflation cools, continue to put pressure on household budgets across South Africa.
