South Africa’s water sector has come under intense scrutiny following the release of the latest Green Drop Report by Minister Pemmy Majodina, revealing a system strained by neglect, underinvestment, and poor management. The report paints a sobering picture of municipal wastewater treatment plants, many of which are failing to meet basic operational and environmental standards.

A significant portion of wastewater systems has been classified as being in critical condition, highlighting the growing risk of untreated or poorly treated sewage contaminating rivers and communities. Previous assessments have already shown that nearly 39% of municipal systems fall into this high-risk category, underlining the scale of the crisis.

The findings point to a combination of challenges, including ageing infrastructure, lack of skilled personnel, insufficient funding, and weak accountability at local government level. In many areas, poor maintenance and vandalism further compound the problem, leaving communities vulnerable to health hazards and environmental degradation.

Majodina’s report is more than just a technical audit—it is a call to action. It emphasizes the urgent need for investment, stronger oversight, and decisive leadership to restore confidence in the country’s water systems. Without swift intervention, the consequences could be severe, threatening both public health and long-term water security.
