1 hr agoMinister of Social Development Sisisi Tolashe is facing renewed scrutiny amid growing demands for her to be held accountable over alleged failures to properly disclose high-value gifts, including luxury items reportedly worth close to R1 million. The controversy has escalated into formal complaints, a criminal case, and intensified political pressure from opposition parties calling for transparency and possible removal from office.
According to reports, ActionSA has opened a criminal case and lodged complaints with Parliament’s Ethics Committee and the Public Protector, accusing the minister of breaching the Executive Members’ Ethics Act and misleading Parliament about undeclared gifts. The allegations centre on claims that luxury vehicles allegedly received as donations were not properly declared and may have been used for private benefit.
Opposition parties argue that such undeclared benefits undermine public trust and violate strict rules governing members of Cabinet, which require disclosure or prior approval for gifts exceeding set limits. They have also urged President Cyril Ramaphosa to intervene and determine whether proper procedures were followed.
Tolashe has not yet publicly responded in detail to the latest criminal complaint, but the matter continues to draw widespread attention in Parliament and among the public. Investigations by oversight bodies are expected to determine whether ethical or legal breaches occurred, and what consequences, if any, will follow.
The unfolding controversy highlights ongoing concerns about transparency, accountability, and ethics in public office, with critics insisting that leadership standards must be strictly enforced to preserve trust in government institutions.
