5 hrs agoSouth Africa was once tipped as a priority launch market for Tesla in 2026, according to industry insiders — but those plans have now stalled amid rising political tensions between the United States and South Africa, throwing a massive global brand’s debut into uncertainty.
This isn’t Tesla’s first flirtation with the local market. Back in 2016, the company began taking pre-orders for the Model 3 and even set up an office in Cape Town, with expectations of deliveries by early 2018. A few years later, Elon Musk hinted that Tesla might finally open officially by the end of 2019 — yet that, too, never materialised.
The reasons go beyond geopolitics. South Africa’s hefty 25 % import duty on electric vehicles (EVs) — coupled with an outdated luxury goods tax that now hits even modestly priced EVs makes the business case less compelling.
Meanwhile, the EV landscape in South Africa is already shifting. BYD has been selling multiple new‑energy models since 2023 and is planning to bring its luxury Denza sub‑brand, while other Chinese brands, including Chery, GWM and Geely, continue expanding their footprint locally.
