South Africa’s utility giant Eskom has extended a key incentive to energise rooftop solar adoption — waiving registration fees for small‑scale solar systems for another six months, now until 30 September 2026. The move is designed to lower barriers for homeowners and small businesses looking to tap into clean energy and reduce reliance on the strained national grid.

Under the Small‑Scale Embedded Generation regime, systems up to 50 kW can now be registered and connected safely without paying application or connection charges, a lifeline for many would‑be solar adopters who previously faced steep administrative costs. Eskom has also introduced a prepaid metering option aimed at making residential solar integration easier and more flexible.

The South African Photovoltaic Industry Association (SAPVIA) welcomed the extension, saying it removes a costly “compliance tax” that deterred registrations and stimulates broader participation in the renewable transition. However, SAPVIA warns that municipal delays and patchy approval processes remain a drag on uptake.

Proper registration, the group stresses, isn’t just bureaucracy — it’s vital for grid safety, avoiding dangerous unintended power feedback during outages and helping manage voltage fluctuations as solar installations rise.
