Standard Bank has partnered with renewable energy company Anthem to finance what is now regarded as South Africa’s largest single solar photovoltaic (PV) development to reach financial close—the Notsi Solar Project in the Free State. This massive initiative marks a turning point in the country’s clean energy transition, highlighting how private finance and innovation are reshaping the power sector.

The project is designed with an impressive generation capacity of about 475 megawatts, enough to produce roughly 1.5 million megawatt-hours of electricity annually. That output can power around 140,000 homes each year, significantly reducing reliance on carbon-heavy energy sources while strengthening the national grid. The electricity will mainly serve commercial and industrial users through long-term agreements with major offtakers, helping companies reduce emissions and stabilize energy costs.

Standard Bank plays a central role beyond financing—it acts as lead arranger, facility agent, and hedging bank, coordinating the complex funding structure behind the project. Anthem, one of South Africa’s leading independent power producers, brings its large-scale renewable expertise, with over 2 gigawatts of wind, solar, and hydro assets already in its portfolio.

Beyond its size, the project is significant for accelerating South Africa’s shift toward a more decentralized, market-driven energy system. It supports electricity market reforms, enables corporate decarbonization, and strengthens energy security at a time when demand for reliable power continues to grow. In essence, it represents a major step toward a cleaner, more resilient energy future for the country.
