A noteworthy shift is underway as more skilled South Africans who once built lives in places like Australia, the United Kingdom and Canada are choosing to return home, signalling a reverse emigration trend rather than the one‑way departure seen in past decades.

According to a new report by The TEFL Academy, many returnees aren’t simply escaping a foreign life — they’re actively reclaiming family ties, lifestyle satisfaction and a sense of belonging. A majority of those surveyed said the strongest draw back home was reconnecting with loved ones, with 77% citing missing family and friends as their top reason. Culture, social warmth and outdoor life were also key pull factors that outweighed purely financial motivations.

This trend is further enabled by the rise of remote work, allowing professionals to earn in foreign currencies while living in South Africa and enjoying its lower cost of living. Recruitment firms have reported a jump in enquiries from expats exploring a return, especially from the UK, Australia and Canada.

Rather than a simple reversal of emigration, many South Africans are engaging in “circular mobility” — gaining international experience, then bringing that expertise and global perspective back home. This evolving migration pattern reflects changing priorities, where quality of life and community connection increasingly influence life choices.
