South Africa’s International Hotel School has achieved a remarkable milestone by entering the top 50 in the QS World University Rankings by Subject, placing 44th worldwide in hospitality and leisure management — its best performance ever.

The QS rankings evaluate more than 21 000 academic programmes across nearly 1 900 universities in over 100 countries, highlighting excellence in 55 subject areas. Sub‑Saharan African institutions appeared almost 200 times in the 2026 rankings, and South Africa contributed about 120 entries — a testament to the growing strength of the region’s higher education landscape.

The International Hotel School’s rise from the 101–150 bracket in 2025 to a top‑50 position demonstrates the quality of its specialised training in hospitality, tourism and service management. Established in 1994 in Johannesburg to address a shortage of skilled hospitality professionals, the school now operates six campuses nationwide and graduates over 1 300 students annually, many of whom go on to careers with global brands like Disney, Ritz‑Carlton and Seabourn.

While private “universities” in South Africa still must meet strict state criteria, this achievement highlights how focused, industry‑aligned education can elevate local institutions onto the world stage.
