1 hr agoSouth Africans are being urged to stay alert as a volatile weather system is expected to trigger severe thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and damaging winds across five provinces. According to the South African Weather Service (SAWS), unstable atmospheric conditions are creating a high risk of rapidly developing storms that could impact daily life, travel, and infrastructure.
The affected regions include parts of KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, Free State, and the North West, where scattered to widespread thunderstorms are forecast to intensify throughout the day. These storms may bring intense downpours capable of causing localised flooding, especially in low-lying and poorly drained areas.
Strong wind gusts are also expected, raising concerns about fallen trees, damaged roofs, and disruptions to electricity supply. In some areas, hail and frequent lightning strikes could further increase the danger, particularly for commuters and outdoor activities.
Authorities are warning residents to avoid crossing flooded roads, secure loose objects around homes, and monitor official weather updates closely as conditions may change quickly.
Emergency services remain on standby, while disaster management teams are preparing for possible storm-related incidents.
Meteorologists say such springtime instability is not unusual, but the intensity of today’s system highlights the growing unpredictability of seasonal weather patterns.
Residents are advised to remain cautious and prioritize safety as the storm system moves across the country.
