1 hr agoSouth Africa’s largest bank, Standard Bank, recently confirmed that unauthorised third‑party access compromised the personal information of some clients including names, ID numbers and company registration details in a data breach first detected on 23 March 2026. While the bank says its core banking systems remain secure and fully operational, the inciden has raised fresh concerns about data safety in one of the country’s bggest financial institutions.
In response, Standard Bank is strengthening its monitoring and control systems, working with external experts to prevent similar breaches in future. Clients have been advised to update passwords, enable enhanced digital security features and remain vigilant against suspicious communications that could exploit the leaked information.
The bank also highlighted that its subsidiary Liberty was affected by the same breach, though its services continue to operate normally.
Security experts warn that such leaks increase the risk of impersonation fraud, where criminals use stolen personal data to contact victims with seemingly legitimate requests. Standard Bank is working with regulators and urging customers to register with fraud‑prevention services to protect their identities.
