2 hrs agoA special National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the African National Congress (ANC) has placed the growing rift between the ANC and its long-time ally, the South African Communist Party (SACP), at the heart of its agenda. The tension stems from the SACP’s decision to contest future local government elections independently, a move that has sparked intense debate within the governing alliance.
According to ANC leadership, the development is seen as a turning point that could reshape the structure and unity of the tripartite alliance. The ANC has raised concerns about the implications of dual membership, where individuals belong to both the ANC and SACP while potentially competing against each other at the polls. This issue has become one of the most contentious discussion points in the meeting.
ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has described the situation as politically significant, warning that it complicates long-standing cooperation between the two organisations. The ANC argues that if both parties contest the same wards and municipalities, it challenges shared electoral strategies and raises questions about loyalty within the alliance.
On the other hand, the SACP maintains that its decision reflects unresolved disagreements within the alliance and a need for independent political expression. As discussions continue, the NEC is expected to decide on the future direction of relations, making this one of the most critical moments for the alliance in recent years.
