2 hrs agoThe South African Communist Party (SACP) has reiterated that it is not seeking to weaken its long-standing alliance with the African National Congress (ANC), despite growing political shifts within the country’s left-wing coalition. According to recent discussions involving ANC and SACP leaders, the party insists its strategic relationship with the ANC remains intact, even as it explores greater political independence ahead of future elections.
ANC NEC member Thulas Nxesi stressed that the relationship between the two organisations is rooted in decades of shared struggle and ideological cooperation. He emphasised that tensions or policy disagreements should not be misinterpreted as an attempt to dismantle the alliance. Instead, such debates are seen as part of a healthy democratic process within the broader Tripartite Alliance, which also includes trade union federation COSATU.
The SACP has recently attracted attention for signalling a more assertive political stance, including discussions around contesting elections independently. However, party leaders maintain that this does not equate to breaking ranks with the ANC. Rather, they argue it reflects a need to strengthen the voice of working-class politics within South Africa’s evolving political landscape.
Nxesi further noted that unity among alliance partners remains essential, especially as the country faces economic challenges, inequality, and governance pressures. He called for continued cooperation, dialogue, and mutual respect to ensure that ideological differences do not fracture decades of collaboration.
Ultimately, the SACP’s message is one of balance: affirming loyalty to the alliance while also asserting its own political identity in a changing democratic environment.
