2 hrs agoSouth Africa’s thriving citrus industry is facing a critical test as diesel shortages and looming fuel price hikes threaten to disrupt its highly anticipated export season. With shipments set to peak from April, farmers are increasingly anxious about whether the logistics backbone of the industry can hold under pressure.
Despite government assurances that national fuel supplies remain stable, reports from the ground tell a different story. Some regions are already experiencing limited diesel availability, driven by unusual buying patterns and controlled distribution. This uncertainty comes at a time when the industry can least afford disruptions, especially after achieving record export volumes in 2025.
The real concern lies in the sector’s heavy dependence on road transport. Nearly 95% of citrus produce is moved by trucks from farms to ports, making fuel supply a lifeline for the entire value chain. Any sustained shortage or sharp increase in diesel prices could slow deliveries, inflate costs, and ultimately impact global supply commitments.
Adding to the tension is the influence of global events, particularly instability in the Middle East, which continues to affect energy markets and shipping systems. In response, agricultural groups are calling for urgent government intervention, including temporary fuel levy relief, to cushion farmers from rising operational costs.
As the season unfolds, the industry stands at a crossroads where fuel stability could determine success or setback.
