As winter approaches in South Africa, growing concern is mounting over the sharp increase in paraffin prices, a vital energy source for many low-income households. The Motor Industry Staff Association (MISA) has urged the government to step in and provide relief, warning that the surge is worsening energy poverty across the country.

Paraffin prices have risen by more than R11 per litre, placing immense strain on vulnerable communities who rely on it for cooking, heating, and lighting. According to MISA spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola, this increase is hitting the poorest the hardest, especially as colder months drive higher usage. She emphasized that urgent government intervention is necessary to prevent further hardship.

MISA is advocating for targeted subsidies on paraffin, arguing that this approach would be more effective than general fuel levy reductions. While the government recently introduced a temporary R3 fuel levy cut, critics say it does little to directly assist those dependent on paraffin.

Compounding the issue are global fuel supply disruptions, particularly in the Middle East, which continue to affect pricing and availability. Experts warn that even with improvements in supply routes, recovery could take months, prolonging the pressure on already struggling households.
