South Africa’s ongoing debate over economic transformation has taken a firm turn, with President Cyril Ramaphosa making it clear that calls to scrap Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) and affirmative action are, in his view, unrealistic. He pushed back strongly against critics, arguing that such policies remain essential tools for correcting the deep inequalities created by apartheid.

At the heart of his argument is the belief that BEE is not just a political idea but a necessary economic intervention. Designed to expand opportunities for black South Africans, BEE seeks to address historical exclusion by promoting ownership, employment, and participation in the economy.

Ramaphosa insists that abandoning these measures now would reverse progress rather than accelerate it.

He also highlighted that, while critics claim BEE benefits only a select few, data shows broader gains over time. Improvements in income levels and reductions in poverty among black South Africans suggest that transformation policies have had measurable impact, even if inequality still persists.

Rather than scrapping BEE, Ramaphosa argues for refining and strengthening it to make it more inclusive and effective. For him, the real challenge is not whether transformation should continue—but how to ensure it delivers meaningful change for the majority.
