The N3 toll route near Harrismith in South Africa’s Free State was temporarily shut down on Friday morning after a serious obstruction involving multiple trucks brought traffic to a standstill in both directions. The incident occurred close to the Harrismith North Interchange, one of the busiest freight corridors linking Gauteng with KwaZulu-Natal, and caused immediate and severe congestion along the route.

According to the N3 Toll Concession (N3TC), several trucks became immobilised and blocked all lanes, forcing authorities to implement a full closure while emergency teams worked to clear the roadway. Motorists travelling on both sides of the highway were left stranded in long queues stretching for kilometres as traffic backed up rapidly.

By mid-morning, officials confirmed that all lanes had been successfully reopened after the obstruction was removed. However, authorities warned that although the road was clear, the impact of the incident would continue for several hours as accumulated traffic gradually dispersed.

Road users were strongly advised to remain patient and drive cautiously through the affected stretch, as residual congestion and stop-and-go traffic conditions persisted even after reopening. The N3TC also urged drivers to monitor official updates and plan alternative routes where possible.

The brief but intense disruption highlighted the vulnerability of South Africa’s key freight artery, where even a single obstruction can ripple across national logistics, delaying goods movement, commuter travel, and long-distance transport schedules across provinces.
