1 hr agoA cross-border bus travelling from Zimbabwe to Cape Town has sparked a major investigation after authorities discovered 32 undocumented foreign nationals on board in the Free State, despite the vehicle being fully cleared at the Beitbridge Port of Entry. The bus initially had 43 passengers who were properly processed with valid documents, but later raised alarms when it was intercepted during a road operation near Bloemfontein.
According to the Border Management Authority (BMA), all standard immigration and safety checks were completed at the border, including passenger verification, luggage screening, and weighbridge inspection. Officials insist that at the time of departure, no additional individuals were recorded on the bus. This has deepened the mystery surrounding how the extra passengers were later discovered inside the country.
Authorities believe the undocumented individuals may have boarded the bus after it had already entered South Africa, with possible pickup points suggested along routes such as Makhado and Johannesburg. The bus driver is now under investigation and could face charges for aiding and abetting illegal immigration under the Immigration Act.
The incident has raised serious concerns about internal border security gaps, transport monitoring, and the potential exploitation of long-distance bus services for irregular migration. The case remains under active investigation as officials attempt to trace exactly where and how the passengers were added to the journey.
