Mpumalanga’s Roads Get a Major Makeover with Over R22 Billion Boost

South Africa’s national roads in Mpumalanga are undergoing one of their most significant upgrades in years, with more than R22 billion channelled into rebuilding and refurbishing vital arterial routes, Transport Minister Barbara Creecy announced.

During a recent site inspection of sections of the R40 road — a key link between Mpumalanga and Limpopo that was severely damaged by floods — Creecy highlighted the scale and urgency of the work now underway. The R40 has multiple slipping and damage sites, with three actively being repaired and two in procurement, and an estimated R120 million earmarked to restore earthquake‑like collapse zones.

The investment includes high‑profile projects such as a bridge near Klipkopjes Dam outside White River, which alone cost over R40 million to rebuild after structural failure.

Beyond fixing potholes and cracks, these upgrades are about safety and economic connectivity. Better roads mean smoother freight movement, safer travel for commuters, and improved access to markets and services in both rural and urban areas. With climate extremes becoming more frequent, South Africa’s focus on resilient infrastructure will be central to boosting regional trade and long‑term growth.
