1 hr agoA shocking corruption case has rocked the South African Police Service (SAPS), exposing how internal systems meant to protect the nation were allegedly manipulated for personal gain. A police captain assigned to the Protection and Security Services division has been suspended after investigators uncovered a scheme involving millions of rands.
According to officials, the officer worked within the finance section and allegedly exploited his privileged access to SAPS financial systems. He is accused of disguising fraudulent withdrawals as legitimate travel expenses for members of the presidential protection unit. However, investigations revealed that the funds never reached their intended recipients. Instead, the money was reportedly withdrawn in large cash sums for personal use.
The case came to light after an internal probe flagged suspicious transactions and inconsistencies. Authorities have since registered a fraud case at the Sunnyside Police Station in Pretoria, and the officer now faces both criminal charges and internal disciplinary action.
Importantly, SAPS clarified that no members of the presidential protection team are implicated in the scandal. The incident forms part of a broader anti-corruption drive within the police service, highlighting growing efforts to restore integrity and accountability within its ranks.
