South Africa has marked a major scientific and agricultural milestone with the release of 20 000 doses of locally produced Foot‑and‑Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccine by the Agricultural Research Council (ARC), significantly boosting the country’s ability to protect its livestock against this devastating viral disease.

This breakthrough reflects renewed collaboration between government, researchers and the private sector, as the nation pushes to strengthen its biosecurity and agricultural resilience. At the heart of the effort is the ARC’s enhanced research capacity, which aims to reduce dependence on imported vaccines and improve rapid response capabilities during outbreaks.

Foot‑and‑Mouth Disease is highly contagious among cloven‑hoofed animals such as cattle, sheep and pigs, and outbreaks can cripple trade, trigger movement restrictions, and cause severe economic losses. The newly released vaccine doses will help safeguard food security, protect farmers’ livelihoods, and support long‑term growth in the agricultural sector.

Officials emphasise the role of innovation and science‑led strategies in ensuring that South Africa remains proactive—moving away from reacting to crises towards building durable defenses against animal diseases that threaten rural economies and global trade links.
