2 hrs agoIn a striking case that has shaken confidence in the justice system, former South African prosecutor Ntokozo Mzulwini was sentenced to five years in prison after deliberately manipulating a legal process to protect an illegal immigrant from deportation.
Mzulwini, once tasked with upholding the law, instead chose to distort it. While handling a case involving a Malawian national charged under immigration laws, he falsely claimed the individual fell under refugee legislation—an entirely different legal framework. This misrepresentation was not a simple mistake but a calculated move designed to allow the accused to pay a fine and avoid deportation.
What makes the case even more compelling is how close the deception came to succeeding. Despite an initial warning from a supervising prosecutor who spotted inconsistencies and ordered corrections, Mzulwini ignored the directive. He simply approached another official, repeated the false claims, and secured approval. The accused briefly walked free before the truth surfaced and the process was reversed.
The courtroom eventually became the stage for accountability. Evidence, including altered documents and official records, exposed the scheme. The ruling was decisive: imprisonment, dismissal from service, and a declaration that he is unfit to possess a firearm.
This case serves as a powerful reminder that when those entrusted with justice choose deception, the consequences can be as severe as the crimes they attempt to conceal.
