2 hrs agoIn recent years South Africa has harnessed the power of specialised committees to tackle some of the nation’s most complex challenges, proving that focused expertise and coordinated action can deliver tangible results. One of the most striking examples is the National Energy Crisis Committee (NECOM), which was established in 2022 to address chronic power outages. With representation from government, industry and social partners, NECOM helped steer the country to a milestone of 300 consecutive days without load shedding, significantly stabilising the national grid and boosting investor confidence.
Following this success, similar models have been applied to other priority areas. The National Logistics Crisis Committee has improved freight movement by strengthening public‑private partnerships, expanding rail routes and reducing vessel anchorage delays at Durban port—moves expected to unlock billions in investment.
Meanwhile, a new National Water Crisis Committee has been launched to confront water outages linked to ageing infrastructure and underinvestment, backed by over R156 billion in strategic funding and reforms to ensure service delivery and accountability.
These targeted, expert‑driven institutions illustrate how specialised committees are not just advisory bodies but critical engines of transformation, stability and progress, offering a blueprint for securing South Africa’s future by aligning resources, accountability and action.
