A devastating fire has left Riverlea Secondary School in ruins, with authorities estimating that nearly R45 million will be needed to restore the damaged infrastructure. The blaze, believed to be an act of arson, destroyed key facilities including a library, science laboratory, and storage rooms—critical spaces that support learning and development.

The incident has deeply affected the school community, particularly around 320 learners in Grades 8 and 9 whose education has been disrupted. While older students remain unaffected, the loss of essential learning environments highlights the uneven impact of such tragedies. This is not the first time the school has suffered such damage, as a similar fire occurred the previous year, raising concerns about ongoing safety and security.

Gauteng Education MEC Lebogang Maile strongly condemned the act, emphasizing that there can be no justification for destroying a place of education. He called on the community to assist in identifying those responsible, stressing that schools should be protected as centers of hope and opportunity.

As investigations continue, the focus now shifts to rebuilding—not just the structures, but the sense of safety and stability for learners and teachers alike.
