2 hrs agoAt the annual Umzimvubu Municipal Agricultural Show, farming emerged not merely as a way to grow crops, but as a central engine driving rural economic resilience and opportunity. The event brought established and emerging agricultural producers together to showcase what’s possible when communities harness the power of the land.
For many, farming has become a real source of job creation and community upliftment. Emerging farmer Nontuthuzelo Mbele shared how her diversified activities — from poultry to piggery — have opened doors for others. By employing more than a dozen part‑time workers and producing staples like cabbage, maize and potatoes, her farm has become more than a business — it’s a poverty‑fighting hub that helps local families put food on the table.
Local leadership is backing this shift. With ongoing financial support and market access initiatives, the Umzimvubu Local Municipality is broadening opportunities for smaller producers, reshaping perceptions that farming is only for the unemployed or unskilled. Instead, they’re promoting agriculture as an inclusive and viable economic pathway for everyone, strengthening rural livelihoods and reinforcing farming’s role as a cornerstone of the regional economy.
