1 hr agoA landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between South Africa’s Department of Higher Education and Training and Google South Africa will dramatically expand digital and artificial intelligence (AI) training opportunities for students and educators across the country. The two‑year strategic agreement signed on 30 March 2026 aims to equip thousands of learners in universities, TVET colleges, and Community Education and Training (CET) institutions with cutting‑edge skills essential for the future workplace.
Deputy Minister Dr Mimmy Gondwe highlighted the critical role of digital and AI capabilities in securing employment, fostering entrepreneurship, and preparing young people for an economy shaped by rapid technological change. Under the partnership, 10 000 Google Career Certificate scholarships will be made available, while educators benefit from dedicated AI‑focused professional development initiatives including “Generative AI for Educators” and a “train‑the‑trainer” model to spread skills more broadly.
Beyond training, the collaboration will enhance curriculum development with access to AI tools, support device upgrades through ChromeOS Flex, and contribute to institutional policy and governance around AI deployment. Google further underscored the broader economic promise of AI, noting its contribution to South Africa’s GDP and the transformative potential of closing the digital skills gap for inclusive growth.
This initiative marks a bold step toward building a tech‑ready generation capable of innovation and leadership in a digitally driven global landscape.
