3 hrs agoGauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has made a bold political move by appointing Nkululeko Dunga of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) as the new Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Finance during a major cabinet reshuffle. This marks a historic moment as Dunga becomes one of the first EFF politicians to hold such a strategic provincial portfolio.
Dunga replaces Lebogang Maile, who has been reassigned to lead the education, sports, arts, culture and recreation department. Dunga’s elevation to finance comes shortly after he was sworn in as a member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, highlighting the EFF’s growing influence in provincial governance.
The reshuffle is widely seen as part of Premier Lesufi’s effort to strengthen his minority government and secure broader political backing — especially after difficulties passing key budget legislation. Including the EFF in the executive council could signal a more collaborative approach amid shifting power dynamics in the province.
EFF leaders have described Dunga’s appointment as a step toward advancing a more people‑centred fiscal agenda, reflecting the party’s priorities to address inequality and support working‑class citizens.
This strategic appointment not only alters the balance of political power in Gauteng but also places the EFF at the heart of managing one of South Africa’s most significant provincial ecnonomies.
