South Africa’s flu season has arrived earlier than usual in 2026, sparking concern among health professionals and public health authorities. The National Institute for Communicable Diseases confirmed that the season began around March 9 — weeks ahead of the traditional winter onset — and this unusual early spread raises the risk of a significant rise in infections in the coming weeks.

Cheryl Cohen, head of the Centre for Respiratory Diseases at Wits University, emphasised that while flu typically peaks later in the year, the current trend suggests influenza activity is already underway and expected to increase. Because the virus spreads easily and can lead to severe illness — especially among older adults, young children, and people with weakened immune systems — experts strongly recommend that individuals get vaccinated without delay.

Vaccines offer the best protection by priming the immune system before exposure, and even if immunity takes a couple of weeks to build, getting vaccinated now can significantly reduce the severity of illness and help prevent hospitalisations. With unusual patterns emerging globally and vaccination rates lagging in some regions, health officials say acting early could make all the difference this season.
