1 hr agoA peaceful evening paddle turned into a life-threatening ordeal when a 44-year-old German tourist found himself battling the powerful waters near the Knysna Heads. What began as a simple kayaking trip quickly escalated when he became trapped by a strong outgoing spring tide, leaving him unable to return to shore.
As conditions worsened, concerned eyewitnesses noticed the man struggling in the water and immediately raised the alarm. Their quick thinking triggered a rapid response from the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), whose Knysna team launched a rescue operation within minutes.
Rescuers raced to the scene aboard a rescue craft, navigating challenging sea conditions. Upon arrival, they found the tourist exhausted and unable to paddle against the force of the current. The team swiftly brought him onboard, securing both him and his kayak before safely transporting him back to land.
Fortunately, the man escaped without injury and did not require medical treatment. He later expressed heartfelt gratitude to the rescue crew for their professionalism and speed.
The incident highlights both the unpredictable power of the ocean and the importance of vigilance. It also underscores how crucial swift public action can be—without those alert eyewitnesses, the outcome might have been far more serious.
