Digital Milestone: Home Affairs Expands Smart ID Access via Banks

    South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs has just surpassed a key target in its digital transformation agenda by enabling Smart ID services at over 100 bank branches nationwide, eclipsing its goal before the end of March 2026. 

    Under an innovative Digital Partnership Model, citizens can now visit participating branches of major banks — including Capitec, Standard Bank and First National Bank (FNB) — to apply for replacement Smart IDs or Green ID Book conversions in as little as five minutes, thanks to cutting‑edge fingerprint and facial recognition technology. 

    This rollout adds 110 live service points to the existing 248 traditional Home Affairs offices, boosting access by roughly 44% and significantly reducing long queues and travel times for many South Africans. 

    Since inception, more than 25 000 applications have already been processed through these bank locations, with the system handling applications at a rate of more than one per minute. 

    The initiative is part of the broader Home Affairs @ home reform programme, which aims to drive inclusion and efficiency through digital solutions. With plans to expand to 1 000 branches by 2029, this shift marks a transformative moment in how citizens interact with essential government services.
