2 hrs agoThe National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in the Western Cape is yet to publicly confirm when the Deputy Mayor of Bitou Municipality, Nokuzola Kolwapi, will make her first court appearance following formal charges against her.
Kolwapi’s case exploded into public view after a viral video from December showed her discharging what appeared to be a firearm in a crowded public setting, allegedly celebrating her son’s initiation homecoming.
In a separate clip from the same period, she was seen handing the weapon to her bodyguard after firing multiple shots.
The delay in setting a court date has frustrated critics and political watchdogs. Action SA’s Garden Route chairperson, Patrick Fepiwe, emphasised that “no one in South Africa is above the law,” welcoming the prosecution’s decision as a stand against impunity and a call for transparent governance.
Kolwapi, however, has disputed allegations that a real firearm was involved, claiming in a statement that what was seen in the footage was a toy gun, not an actual weapon.
At this stage, legal observers are watching closely as the saga unfolds, but the NPA has not yet announced a scheduled court appearance date.
