The controversy stems from a combination of delayed payment confirmations, lower-than-expected increases, and poor communication from authorities.
Traditionally, children’s grants are paid early in the month, but an unusual calendar clash with Easter holidays disrupted the schedule. Because older persons’ grants must be processed first, children’s payments were pushed back, creating a ripple effect that delayed support for vulnerable households. Initially, there was no clear confirmation of payment dates, fueling confusion and speculation.
When official dates were finally announced, children’s grants were scheduled after the Easter weekend, leaving many families without funds during a critical period.
For households already struggling with rising living costs, this delay intensified financial pressure.
Adding to the frustration, the 2026 grant increases were modest. The child support grant rose by only R20, reflecting inflation-linked adjustments of around 3.4%.
While technically aligned with economic conditions, beneficiaries felt the increase was insufficient to meet real-world expenses.
Ultimately, the situation highlights deeper systemic issues—administrative delays, rigid payment structures, and a growing gap between policy decisions and everyday realities. For millions relying on these grants, timing isn’t just a technical detail—it’s a lifeline.
