3 hrs agoA deeply troubling picture is emerging from an Ekurhuleni-based special needs institution, where vulnerable learners are being failed by the very system designed to protect them. At the centre of the crisis is Dukathole LSEN School, where months of complaints from parents have now been confirmed by official reports.
Parents describe a learning environment in steady decline, with children not only stagnating but in some cases losing previously gained developmental skills. This regression has raised serious alarm, especially given that many of these learners require consistent and specialised support to thrive. Hygiene and safety concerns further compound the situation, suggesting a broader breakdown in basic care standards.
One of the most disturbing revelations is the lack of structured educational planning. Individual Support Plans—essential tools for guiding the development of children with special needs—have reportedly not been implemented, even months into the academic year. Without these plans, meaningful progress becomes nearly impossible.
Equally concerning is the absence of alternative communication systems for non-verbal learners, leaving many without a voice in their own education. Despite the presence of therapists, interventions appear inconsistent and subjective rather than clinically guided.
This situation highlights a painful truth: policies alone are not enough. Without accountability and proper implementation, the most vulnerable are left behind.
