2 hrs agoThe Border Management Authority (BMA) Commissioner, Dr Michael Masiapato, has made an unannounced visit to South Africa’s busiest land crossing — the Beitbridge Border Post in Musina, Limpopo — to personally oversee traveller processing and efforts to stem criminal activity.
With the Easter holiday travel surge underway, authorities are bracing for a sharp rise in foot and vehicle traffic, prompting heightened scrutiny and operational pressure at the port.
The spotlight on Beitbridge comes amid a recent incident where a bus later intercepted near Bloemfontein was linked to the border. Although BMA officials confirmed it had been processed through Beitbridge according to procedure, questions now swirl over how undocumented foreign nationals — including children — ended up onboard far from the border.
Dr Masiapato’s on‑site monitoring mission, set to continue for several days, underscores the government’s effort to balance efficient traffic flow with tighter crime control.
Meanwhile, law enforcement’s Operation Shanela netted more than 1 000 suspects across Limpopo prior to Easter, roughly half of them undocumented foreign nationals, part of a broader clampdown on illegal movement and smuggling.
