2 hrs agoSouth Africa’s political tension has intensified after the African Transformation Movement (ATM) formally called for impeachment proceedings against President Cyril Ramaphosa, following the release of a highly controversial Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) report linked to the Phala Phala farm scandal. The party has written to the Speaker of Parliament, demanding action under Section 89 of the Constitution, arguing that the findings point to serious abuse of state power and possible institutional corruption.
The IPID report allegedly details how senior members of the presidential protection unit may have concealed the theft of large sums of US dollars from Ramaphosa’s Limpopo farm in 2020. It further claims that officials involved failed to properly report the burglary, bypassed standard police procedures, and engaged in actions outside their legal mandate. These revelations have reignited long-standing allegations that state structures were misused to protect political interests rather than uphold the law.
ATM spokespersons describe the report as “damning,” insisting it exposes a “rogue operation” within law enforcement and raises questions about the integrity of the presidency. They argue that Parliament must urgently intervene through oversight committees and impeachment processes to restore public trust.
The development adds another layer to the already contentious Phala Phala saga, which has shadowed Ramaphosa’s administration since the break-in became public. While supporters say the matter is politically driven, critics believe the new IPID findings could mark a turning point in the ongoing accountability debate.
