2 hrs agoThe African National Congress (ANC) has announced a major shift in how it selects mayoral candidates, introducing a “headhunting” approach aimed at bringing in capable leaders from both inside and outside the party. According to ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula, the move is designed to improve governance in municipalities that have struggled with poor service delivery, corruption concerns, and declining public trust.
Under the new system, the ANC will actively identify individuals with proven leadership ability, including professionals, community leaders, experienced public servants, and political veterans. Communities will also be invited to nominate candidates they believe can effectively run local councils. This marks a significant departure from the party’s traditional internal selection processes, which were largely driven by regional party structures.
All shortlisted candidates will undergo strict vetting, including competency-based interviews, background checks, and even lifestyle audits where necessary. The final list will be compiled through a structured process involving the party’s top leadership and electoral committees.
Mbalula emphasized that leadership should be based on merit, discipline, and capability rather than entitlement. He also confirmed that the selection process will cover key metros and secondary cities, with final mayoral candidates expected to be announced by June 2026 after months of consultation, interviews, and verification.
This reform signals the ANC’s attempt to rebuild credibility and restore confidence in local government leadership across South Africa.
