2 hrs agoThe African National Congress (ANC) has unveiled a bold and unusual strategy aimed at reshaping local government leadership in South Africa. In a significant shift from its traditional internal selection methods, the party now plans to actively “headhunt” capable individuals for mayoral positions ahead of the 2026 local government elections.
According to ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula, the initiative is driven by the urgent need to improve service delivery and restore public trust in struggling municipalities. The party will look beyond its internal structures to identify experienced professionals, community leaders, veterans of government, and individuals with proven leadership and administrative skills. The goal is to find leaders who are not only politically aligned but also technically competent and ethically sound.
In addition to headhunting, the ANC will open a public nomination process, allowing communities to suggest candidates they believe can effectively manage local councils. These candidates will undergo strict vetting, including background checks, qualification verification, competency-based interviews, and in some cases lifestyle audits.
Mbalula emphasized that leadership positions are not rewards but responsibilities, stressing accountability, discipline, and performance. Successful candidates will also sign performance agreements with clear targets and could be removed if they fail to deliver. The process will cover major metros and secondary cities, marking a major transformation in how the ANC selects its mayoral leadership.
